What Is Hyaluronic Acid?

What Is Hyaluronic Acid?

Do you suffer from mature, dry or dehydrated skin? Then chances are, you've heard of this hero skincare ingredient - hyaluronic acid.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is well known in the beauty and skincare industry, owing its popularity to its ability to deliver maximum hydration to skin. Being able to attract and retain up to 1000 times its weight in water, by binding itself to water molecules, makes it a common ingredient in face masks, serums and moisturisers.

What are the benefits of using hyaluronic acid?

The highly hydrating effects of hyaluronic acid help the skin to flex and stretch, which helps reduce the formation of wrinkles.

Its water-pulling qualities also put hyaluronic acid high on the list of best age-rewinding ingredients, especially when targeting dry or sunken areas such as the under eyes.

Which hyaluronic acid products to use?

Hyaluronic acid is most often found as a serum or cream, and is great for all skin types. Serums will typically have a higher concentration of the active ingredient, so are often the go-to form added to skincare routines.

If you have sensitive skin or are prone to breakouts, don't be afraid to give it a try. Hyaluronic acid is produced by our bodies, but as we age, we produce less of it, which is why we see the benefits of topping it up topically.

A non-irritating ingredient, hyaluronic acid should not trigger acne or create other skin reactions, so if you do experience adverse side effects, look into which other active or inactive ingredients are in the product you're using and could be causing irritation.

Hyaluronic acid is perfectly safe to use daily, both in the morning and evening routines. As previously mentioned, the most popular form of hyaluronic acid is a serum. Today, Holistic Skincare Therapist, Sarah Brown, runs us through her hyaluronic acid serum routine. Note - if you are using a cream, the steps will differ slightly.

Step by step instructions:
