SenSpa Signature Scent

I was recently chatting to the Senspa team about their instantly recognisable signature scent and my involvement creating it and I said I’d love to share how it started…
Ten years ago I was approached by Spa director Lina Lotto to recreate the wonderful Senspa signature scent. The brief was for it to be an uplifting and nurturing scent of tropical, citrus, floral and green notes, that envelopes you the instant you cross the threshold into Senspa.
I was immediately transported in my mind to my time living and travelling in South East Asia in the 1990’s. The warm tropical air, Thai food with it’s spicy flavours and lime, lemongrass tastes. I wanted to breathe in the tropical flowers and drift away.
The next challenge was to break down that aromatic feeling into what oils would be appropriate to fit that scent profile and the brief I had been given. Here are some of the keys oils and how it came together.
Key oils chosen:
Lime: This citrus fruit is such a familiar scent and flavour in Thailand. The essential oil from the rind of the fruit is uplifting, energising and gently cleansing, a cheerful, happy oil.
May Chang: This wonderful little fruit, native to China has a similar scent to Lemongrass, but is more gentle with a spicy, citrus, green and floral aroma. It is very popular throughout South East Asia and used a lot for Oriental type perfumes. It is refreshing, uplifting, antiseptic, deodorising and a general tonic to the mind and body.
Bergamot: A type of orange, the essential oil is extracted from the rind and is known for its soothing and elevating properties. The scent of Earl Grey tea, it is a perfect ‘pick me up’ when you need a lift. It has such a wonderful, warm, fruity aroma, with a hint of a floral note, that it had to be a key part of the signature scent.
Ylang Ylang: A sweet, exotic flower, native to South East Asia, its heady, deeply floral aroma speaks of warm tropical evenings. Ylang ylang is sensual, relaxing and soothing to mind and body.
Palmarosa: The essential oil is extracted from this tropical grass, native to South East Asia and has a fresh, green, floral, rosy, scent. The essential oil has calming, antimicrobial and soothing properties and just as the grass it comes from sways in the warm breeze, it reminds us to take things easy, go with the flow and let go of the stresses of daily life.
Other essential oils include: Orange, geranium, tea-tree and rosemary.
When the blend all came together, it was just how it I had hoped I would be - One whiff and you are experiencing a little bit of Thailand in the heart of the New Forest.
Please note: As with all essential oils – always dilute first before applying to the skin and consult a qualified aromatherapist if you are uncertain of how to use or dosage. If you have a specific allergy or contra-indications avoid use.
You can take SenSpa home with you. Our essential oil and our specially created burners are available online and in our boutique.
