Tackling Pesky Belly Fat

Every year, on 11th-17th June the world celebrates Men’s Health Week, a time dedicated to raising awareness of issues that are affecting men’s health and wellbeing. One major issue that affects everyone, not just men, is the increased fat that sits around our middles. This is the most stubborn form of fat in our bodies, caused by busy lifestyles, stressful jobs, alcohol and overeating sugary processed foods, belly fat is something that is unavoidable when the lack of access to a healthy diet and regular exercise is present.

There are many men’s health issues that arise from having an increased waistline including high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.  If you are reading this and your waistline is over 37 inches then now is the time to act.

Many people look for quick fixes to get rid of abdominal fat - but what actually works? Belly fat is simply where your body stores energy, so you need to take a whole-body approach to tackle it.

Sean Hincks, Operations Manager at SenSpa, provides some top tips on how to tackle belly fat head on to gain results quickly:

  1. Cut down the amount of alcohol consumed

Alcohol contains lots of calories and is the main offender when it comes to pesky belly fat. Men typically store the fat created by surplus calories in their stomach hence the ‘beer belly’. By reducing the amount of alcohol consumed in a week, you will see drastic changes to the size of your belly along with your overall energy levels and appearance.

  1. Adapt your diet

By making simple changes to your diet will allow you to reduce belly fat. Having a high protein diet will help to avoid you over eating. It’s not just dinner times; add protein to all your meals including breakfast, lunchtime and daily snacks. There is a vast amount of evidence out there highlighting the importance of protein in your diet, along with avoiding sugary drinks. Instead of a glass of orange squash or juice, replace this with a glass of water. consuming water will help you to feel full and flush your body of any toxins

  1. Reduce your stress levels

Stress causes your body to gain fat because it triggers the release of the stress hormone cortisol, which in turn increases your appetite. You will probably notice how you reach for the chocolate after having a bad day. Take some time out to relax and to switch off from your daily stresses.   1. Get moving
