The Healing Powers of Hydrotherapy

15th Feb 2018

During the winter we crave comfort whether that’s through an indulgent chocolate bar or a well-deserved pamper evening. Hydrotherapy gives your body the nutrients it needs during these chilly months and will help slim-down after an indulgent Christmas, whilst also being pampering.

The proven health benefits of hydrotherapy include reduction of inflammation, build-up of a strong immune system, weight loss and many other perks. You could say it’s the magic of water however there is a proven science behind it as a recent study by the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam has shown that a hot-to-cold shower every day could boost your immune system and help you fight the common cold.

Jill Davies, Co-Director of Herbs Hands Healing, champions this technique which is known as Contrast Water Therapy. Jill has been advocating hot and cold showers for over 30 years and believes this simple adjustment to your shower could provide you with a stronger immune system, a better zest for life and even the ability to control your body’s temperature better.

Our guests have control over their own contrast water therapy if they so wish to make use of the spa facilities. Experience showers allow you to choose from tropical rainfall or a refreshing and invigorating cold sea storm or ice storm encompassing your whole body to awaken the senses.

The alternation of hot and cold brings blood to the surface and then back into the deeper central core of the body making it the quickest way of moving blood around the body. This is beneficial during winter as the change from hot to cold gets your body used to rapid changes in temperature meaning you will be less prone to chills from the weather.

If you’ve visited before you may have been brave enough to try out our ice room for an invigorating boost to your spa day. In response to cold water your white blood cells rapidly increase. These cells include lymphocytes which help to eliminate bacteria and bad toxins in the body helping to remove waste products and spreading better nutrition around your system. Try out our Essence of SenSpa day pass to have unlimited use of the spa facilities including our ice room in which wooden buckets suspended from the ceiling help to sooth the skin and cool down.

Although it can be stressed the health benefits of cold water on the body it may appeal to some for a more tropical experience in our hydrotherapy pool during these chilly months. The water is heated to approximately 37 °C with gentle massaging bubbles and water jets that help to relax muscles ease tension and improve joint mobility. All these health benefits without moving a muscle!

Experience these healing benefits for yourself. Book a soothing spa day or invigorating spa break today.
