What Is Reiki

What is Reiki?
Reiki is a natural healing technique developed in Japan in the early 1900’s. The word ‘Reiki’ literally means universal life force energy.
It was founded by Dr Usui who wanted to find out how religious leaders from the past such as Jesus and Buddha had healed. He searched through old Buddhist and Sanskrit texts and eventually spent 21 days meditating on a sacred mountain in Japan. On the 21st day he discovered how to channel Reiki energy and attune other people to it. No one knows exactly what happened on the mountain or how he discovered the energy, but since then Reiki healing has become more and more popular and widely used as a complimentary therapy. Although Dr Usui discovered Reiki after studying religious text, Reiki itself has no connection to any religion.
How does Reiki work?
Reiki works on the chakra system in the body also used in other healing techniques such as Ayurveda. Chakras are energy centres in the body and Reiki focuses on 7 major centres, each one associated with different body organs, feelings and emotions.
Chakra’s absorb energy from the environment and when the energy is flowing freely you are in a perfect state of health and well being. If there is disharmony in an area of your life one or more of your chakras tend to slow or become blocked. If this happens the energy can’t flow properly which can lead to illness, stress or a general lack of energy. Reiki helps to clear the blockages allowing the energy to flow and harmony to be restored.

What Should I expect from a Reiki treatment?
Reiki energy can penetrate anything so there is no need to remove any clothing, you simply lay down on the treatment couch and relax.
Your therapist will place her hands on set places on your body and hold them for a few minutes while the energy is channelled through her into you. As she moves through the sequence you may experience an intense warming in certain areas and possibly tingling. You may not feel anything physical just deeply relaxed. Some people may experience an emotional release such as crying or bursting into laughter. Don’t worry if this happens it is a good sign that you are taking in the energy and clearing some blockages. At the end of your treatment your therapist will give you some time to relax before helping you sit up.
Once you have left the treatment room it is a good idea to sit or lie down quietly for a while to relax and let the energy carry on working. Be sure to drink water after the treatment as Reiki releases toxins from the body.
