Your Guide to a Healthy Skincare Regime - Part Two

Laura Shackell, our skincare expert at the SenSpa boutique, continues to talk us through perfecting your skincare regime and how to get maximum results from your products.
Following on from part one, you may have started to see a visible improvemnet to your skin using our three step system. However, if this is not the case, you may want to consider the following:
- How long have you been carrying out your new skincare regime? It takes at least 28 days for the skin renewal cycle to complete, which means it will take this long to notice a change in your skin.
- Have you selected the correct products for your skin type? If you are unsure of the right products, then a beauty consultant will be able to recommend the best product to suit your skin.
- Do you have a specific concern in regards to your skin? Some concerns such as acne or sensitivity may need some extra products to aid the skin. We will go into more detail about these products in this blog.
- Have you been carrying out your routine every day? If you haven’t managed to continue your routine day and night, then switch it to a time of day that fits around your schedule. It’s better to do it once then not at all.
A beauty consultant will be able to give you specific advice and lifestyle recommendations around your individual needs. Below we delve into the next level of skincare products to add to your regime:
Over the week your skin will build up an excess of oil or dry skin cells along with dead skin cells. This creates a barrier over the skin causing your skin to look dull and lifeless. This can also lead to an increase in acne as this will start blocking the pores. By carrying out an exfoliation once a week will remove all of the dead skin, leaving your face fresh and pores open, accessible for nutrients to penetrate in. It’s worth remembering that without exfoliation this barrier builds up, preventing your moisturiser from feeding the skin too. Toning (as mentioned in Part 1) is to be done after you exfoliate to close the pores.
Masks are brilliant and are not used regularly enough in most regimes. Masks were initially designed to help draw out impurities from the skin and remove excess oil. However over time, the industry have developed masks for all skin conditions and concerns. From sensitive, dry, acne prone skin to ageing and lifeless skin. It is recommended to leave a mask on for 10-15 minutes unless stated otherwise leaving you time to go about your day. After the mask is washed off, apply toner to help close the pores followed by an application of serum, eye cream and moisturiser. A top tip is to apply a mask after your weekly exfoliation as the pores are open, allowing deeper penetration of the mask, gaining maximum results.
There are number of serums on the market that are aimed towards tackling our ever-ageing skin. Serums also help tackle specific skin concerns as these contain concentrated ingredients, such as reduce sensitivity, help aid reoccurrences of acne and reduction of hyperpigmentation caused by the sun. Serums work on penetrating deeper into layers of the skin which your normal moisturiser can’t reach due to their molecular structure. These are thin products that are applied underneath your moisturiser. If you are concerned about the amount of product your are applying at one time, serums are made to glide on to the skin and to be absorbed quickly. I recommend morning and evening for best results.
Facial oils come in different scents, thickness and properties. Usage of these can differ person to person as well as product to product dependant on the skins needs. Facial oils don’t just hydrate the skin; some oils can contain anti-ageing properties, soothing and clarifying properties. Similar to serums they penetrate through to the cells and skin tissues. In regards to usage, some may find their skin is quite dry and tight which would benefit from daily usage. Normal through to combination skin types can get away with using oils a couple of times a week. Oils can be applied before a moisturiser for extra nourishment or instead of a moisturiser or as an overnight treatment. A natural based oil is best to look for as synthetic oils can end up blocking the pores and making the skin worse in the long run.
The eye area is a delicate area of skin and needs special care and attention. The area is 3 times thinner than the rest of the face. This means specific eye creams are needed. If you have ever wondered why you can’t just use your normal moisturiser for full coverage then this is due to the richness of moisturisers leaving your eye area looking heavy and appearing as you have unwanted bags. An eye cream is thin enough to be absorbed and tackles bags and puffiness. Eye creams can go a long way, so only a small amount is required underneath the eyes, the sides next to the temple and the eye brow bone. If you suffer with dry eye lids, a small application of eye cream can hydrate this area.
As mentioned in part one, moisturisers are essential as it prevents the skin feeling tight and dry throughout the day. This also prevents a build-up of dry skin. If you air on the side of an oily, sensitive or ageing skin then a specific moisturiser can combat these for you.
Night Creams are an extra addition to your skincare regime for that final boost of the day. Whilst we sleep cell regeneration doubles and your skin is more receptive to active ingredients, which is a perfect time to feed the skin. Night creams are richer than your average moisturisers due to the active ingredients. Throughout the night the skin hasn’t had to fight through pollution and makeup build-up meaning it can focus on regeneration. Night creams are fantastic if you lack time in your daily routine as once applied all you need to do is let it work whilst you sleep.
