5 Simple Steps to Smooth, Flip-Flop Ready Feet

Now that the warmer weather is upon us, Holistic Beauty Therapist Sarah Brown helps us to kick off those trainers and free our feet.
Nail care is often seen as a luxury treatment; however, there are several benefits to nail care including promoting healthy nails, preventing infections, improving appearance, and specifically for foot care, helping to prevent and treat common foot problems such as calluses, corns, and ingrown toenails.
Regular nail care can also enhance self-care and promote relaxation. Pedicures are recommended every 4-6 weeks. However you may wish to squeeze in a couple of extra foot treatments before spring is over for easy foot care maintenance during the summer months.
To prepare your feet for those summer months ahead, start with a few simple steps to prepare your feet for flip flops:
Step 1: Soak & Exfoliate for Smooth Feet
Scrubbing your feet with a gentle exfoliating scrub once or twice a week, particularly the pesky heel callouses, is a key step to keeping your feet flip flop ready. A pumice stone or foot file is also a great tool to maintain your feet easily.
ESPA Exfoliating Body Polish sweeps away dry, dull skin whilst the sweet almond oil nourishes and hydrates.
Step 2: Protect Your Feet by Avoiding Barefoot Walking
Once the sun comes out, it can be tempting to free the feet altogether of footwear. If you want callous-free feet, don’t walk barefoot!
Step 3: Moisturise & Hydrate Deeply
Feet require a much more intensive moisturising ritual; ideally, lather in a rich foot cream after showering to retain moisture. If you suffer from dry, cracked feet, give your feet some TLC before you hop into bed at night. Lather on the foot cream and pop on a sock. In the morning, your feet will be super hydrated and soft.
Step 4: Trim, Cute & File Nails Correctly
Summer is the most important time of the year to keep your cuticles in check. Nails grow faster in the summer months, so it is essential to keep cuticles tidy to avoid toe infections and for the polish finish to look neat. Apply a cuticle remover (roughly every two to three weeks), push back the cuticle and gently trim any hanging skin with cuticle clippers. Or schedule a pedicure if you are unsure how to care for your cuticles confidently.

Step 5: Don't Forget SPF!
An area commonly forgotten about when applying sunscreen, but SPF must also be applied to your feet. It's essential to apply sun protection to the top of your feet, as this area receives the most UV radiation when you are walking around. Protect bare feet or exposed feet and toes with moisturising sunscreen, which has a minimum SPF of 50.
