Turn Your Evening Routine Into a Sleep Ritual
There’s often very little space between the day ending and bedtime beginning. One minute you’re answering an email, watching television or scrolling through your phone, and the next you’re expecting your mind to switch off because you’ve turned out the light.
Creating a sleep ritual is simply about making that transition a little gentler. Not a complicated wellness routine or another list of things you should be doing, but a few familiar cues that signal the busy part of the day is coming to an end.
At SenSpa, our approach to wellbeing is about finding what works for you. Whether you’re spending time with us at our spa in the New Forest or creating a quieter evening at home, it can start with something very simple.
Start winding down before you get into bed
Rather than saving relaxation for the moment your head reaches the pillow, begin a little earlier.
Lower the lights. Put tomorrow’s jobs somewhere other than your head (a notebook works nicely). Change into something comfortable. These small shifts help create a boundary between daytime and rest, particularly when working, relaxing and sleeping increasingly happen in the same spaces.
And give your phone a bedtime too.
Putting some distance between yourself and your screen gives you a chance to step away from emails, notifications and the temptation of one last scroll that somehow becomes twenty minutes. You don’t have to disappear digitally for the entire evening. Even a short screen-free window creates space for something slower.
Make bathing part of the ritual
Warm water naturally changes the rhythm of an evening. There’s nowhere particularly productive to be when you’re sitting in a bath, which is rather the point.
Our Relax & Calm collection can become part of this everyday ritual, bringing familiar scents and textures into the evening. Take your time with a warm bath, then follow with body care applied slowly rather than hurriedly on the way to bed.
The SenSpa Sleep Therapy Gift Box also brings together products for a quieter evening routine, while the Scentered Sleep Well Therapy Balm is small enough to keep beside your bed. Apply it to your pulse points and let the aroma become a familiar cue that the day is drawing to a close.
You don’t need to use everything. The value of a ritual lies partly in its familiarity.
Swap scrolling for a few pages
When the phone goes down, pick up a book instead.
Reading gives your attention somewhere quieter to settle, concentrating on one story rather than moving between messages, videos and notifications.
It’s something we’ve embraced in our Digital Detox Spa Break at Careys Manor. This New Forest spa break includes a digital amnesty box, giving you somewhere to put your phone away and leave it there for a while. In its place, pick up a book you’ve been meaning to read and find a cosy corner of the Manor, settle into your room or head outside into t
Combined with time in SenSpa and walks among ancient woodland and open heath, it’s an opportunity to explore what happens when the phone gets a little less attention for a couple of days.
When tension needs a little more attention
Sometimes the day follows us to bed physically too: a tight jaw, raised shoulders or tension around the neck and scalp.
Our Ayurvedic Head Massage focuses on the scalp, face, neck and shoulders using traditional Ayurvedic techniques and rhythmic massage. Warm organic coconut oil is worked into the scalp, while massage through the head, neck and shoulders focuses on areas where tension commonly gathers.
It’s a treatment often chosen by guests carrying tension through their upper body or looking to bring a slower pace to their spa break in the New Forest.
Keep your sleep ritual simple
A sleep ritual doesn’t need to begin two hours before bed or involve an immaculate collection of candles, journals and herbal teas - although that does sound dreamy!
Choose one or two things you can realistically repeat. Put your phone away while you run a bath. Read ten pages. Massage a little balm onto your pulse points before turning out the light.
And if you’re staying at our spa hotel in the New Forest, you can take some of those cues home with you: a familiar scent, a few pages before bed or simply giving your phone the night off.
Small, repeated rituals can create a gentler ending to the day. Tomorrow’s emails will still be there in the morning.
